The key to simplified daily homemaking is to make each one of these daily basics as easy and straightforward as possible. The less overwhelmed you feel with keeping up with these daily tasks, the more energy you'll have to pursue other homemaking tasks and projects.
If you're waking up feeling immediately overwhelmed by the messy state of your home and like you're always "behind" on housework, then focusing on getting good at the 4 Daily Basics is a great place to start!
In this blog post, I'll be sharing what the 4 Daily Basics of homemaking are and what tasks are included in each.
When I narrowed my focus down to these basics and titled them as my "4 Daily Basics" that's when I started growing and improving as a homemaker. Let's get into it! 💕

The 4 Daily Basics of Intentional Homemaking
One of the first mistakes I made when I first started homemaking was that I focused more on the "fun" aspects of homemaking than I did the basics. I wanted to skip to the decorating, the baking, and the reorganizing.
But what I quickly realized, was that it wasn't as fun or rewarding as I had hoped.
Decorating didn't make my home feel better when clutter covered every surface.
Baking was stressful because it created even more dishes than I struggled to manage.
And reorganizing made me feel overwhelmed, so I'd quit midway through.
It wasn't until I realized I needed to stop skipping steps and focus on the basics that I would actually enjoy homemaking. I knew I needed some foundational skills that could only be built by putting in the effort and creating good systems & habits. This is one of the most important things I've learned since I started to take intentional homemaking seriously...
You need to focus on the 4 Daily Basics to keep your home functional and comfortable.
Having this strong foundation in your homemaking makes it so you can enjoy your home and have the time & ability to work on other homemaking projects!
So what are the 4 Daily Basics of homemaking?
These are the areas of focus I've found it important to prioritize every day. My family works together to complete the tasks related to these basics so we can keep our home running smoothly.
The 4 Daily Basics of homemaking are:
1) Food
2) Dishes
3) Laundry
4) Tidying Up the House
When I first started getting my life at home in order, I would often repeat this list to myself in my head. It would help me stay focused on one thing at a time so I wouldn't feel as overwhelmed. It also helped me create intentional systems for each of these areas so my family could work more effectively together to get them accomplished.
Here is what the 4 Daily Basics include, task-wise, in each area.
1) Food
making breakfast, lunch, & dinner (following my seasonal meal plan)
grocery shopping (on the day it's scheduled)
completing the daily meal prep tasks on my meal prep list
2) Dishes
unloading the dishwasher in the morning before breakfast
kitchen cleanup routine after every meal
3) Laundry
washing & drying one load of laundry a day
folding and putting away the clean laundry load in the afternoon
4) Tidying Up the House
going through each room together as a family and using my "Quick Tidy Method" to get the house tidied up and put back in order

Which one of the 4 Daily Basics should you focus on first?
These daily basics are essential. When any one of them isn't regularly attended to, you will find yourself stressed, overwhelmed, and feel like you're always "behind" on everything. So which one of these should you focus on first?
I have two suggestions:
Focus on the one that is causing you the most daily stress.
Sometimes we have a good handle on laundry, but not on tidying the house. Or we've gotten good at decluttering and tidying, but can't keep up with doing the dishes. If this is the case for you, spend your time and effort on the daily basic that feels the most stressful.
But if all the daily basics feel overwhelming to you right now as a homemaker...
Focus on the 4 Daily Basics in order.
Start with the first one - which is "Food" and go in order from there. My life was in disarray and unmanageable when I got started. Getting my family's meal times in order by creating my Seasonal Meal Planning system is what freed up my time and energy to get the rest of my life in order.
I want to encourage you...
Having systems for how to manage these daily basics of homemaking will give your home a sense of structure and organization that reduces stress and makes homemaking much more simple.
Even if you're feeling overwhelmed and like you'd never be able to keep up with everything - I promise that it's absolutely possible.
As a homeschooling, stay-at-home mom of four children, and someone who struggles with chronic health issues - I've often felt that it would be too hard to create a life at home that was comfortable.
But by making changes, creating systems, practicing good habits, and facilitating an attitude of teamwork at home, it's absolutely possible! 💜
